The flexible smartphone race
The majority of phone manufacturers are in a battle. They want to be the one to release the next best thing. They want to get to the finish line before their competition. The problem with that is the finish line isn’t stagnant. Instead, it’s dynamic. It continues to be pushed forward with each new innovation that’s introduced to the masses. Samsung is about to extend the finish line, and the distance it puts between itself and the other brands might make it difficult for those with hopes of catching up any time soon. The current finish line is a bendable and pliable smartphone screen display.Imagine what you could do if your smartphone display could be molded to fit your needs. Perhaps you’re having a difficult time thinking of what you could do with it, but that’s only because something like this has never been released before. The display will be made of plastic, and this means four things.
1. You can shape it to fit any space you need to store or carry it, including making it so the phone is standing at the perfect angle on your desk at work or something similar.
2. It is less susceptible to the screen breaking when it’s dropped, as most glass displays are prone to do.
3. It has the potential to be a cheaper option to a glass display in the long run. When it first is released, it’s bound to be worth a pretty penny. But perhaps over time, the savings the manufacturer gets could be passed down to the consumer. It’s not all that likely, but it is a possibility.
4. If your phone has the plastic display versus the glass display, your phone will be lighter. We all have enough things around with us. Anything we can lighten, the better we will be for it.
Samsung is on it!
Samsung has a prototype completed, and they’re hoping to start mass producing these bendable plastic phones displays sometime in the first half of 2013. So far, Samsung hasn’t been able to mass produce this technology, but they remain optimistic. If Samsung succeeds, it could redefine the current smartphone market, which will be more than a few paces ahead of other big name brands in the race to the finish.
